This work is based on a 17th-century painting by Carlo Dolci (1616-1686), a Florentine painter known for his detailed and devotional works.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary in a sorrowful pose, often with her hand near her face, hence the name "Madonna del Dito" (Madonna of the Thumb/Finger).
Dolci's original "Mater Dolorosa" was painted around 1655 and is famous for its numerous reproductions.
